Voices Across Borders: Moldovan Women Writers in London

Last night, the Romanian Cultural Institute in London became a meeting place for some of the most exciting literary voices of the diaspora from the Republic of Moldova, in a celebration of contemporary writing that crossed borders, languages and lived experiences. Our guest authors were Anda Vahnovan, Vica Demici and Stela Brinzeanu.
The evening opened with a welcome address by RCI London’s Deputy Director Raluca Ioana Cimpoiasu, who acknowledged the growing international recognition of female authors from the Republic of Moldova and invited H.E. Laura Popescu, Ambassador of Romania to the United Kingdom, and H.E. Ruslan Bolbocean, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the United Kingdom, to share a few words. Both ambassadors spoke about the strong cultural ties and close collaboration between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, highlighting literature as a vital bridge between communities and generations.
Moderated by Gabriela Mocan, RCI London’s lead on literary programmes, the conversation brought into focus the strength, relevance and growing visibility of diaspora writers today. She praised the invited authors for the richness, courage, and originality of their work, while encouraging British readers and publishers alike to discover these compelling contemporary voices.
Through a lively dialogue, the protagonists reflected on writing between cultures and languages, on memory, migration, identity and belonging, as well as on the challenges and freedoms that shape the experience of diaspora authors today. Their readings - moving, powerful, and at times deeply intimate - offered audience a glimpse into their distinct literary worlds united by creativity.
The evening concluded with a magical musical moment offered by Vica Demici, who performed — in English and Romanian — an original song written and composed by herself.
The event was attended by a large and enthusiastic audience, including diaspora members from both countries, writers, translators and British publishers, all captivated by the stories and readings shared throughout the evening.
