Remembering George Sand: A Cross-Border Dialogue with Fiona Sampson and Alexandru Negriuc

The Romanian Cultural Institute in London recently hosted a special evening marking the publication, by Doubleday, of Fiona Sampson’s "Becoming George" - an outstanding new biography that has already attracted significant critical acclaim and excellent reviews. The event was opened by RCI London director Aura Woodward, who welcomed the audience and presented the dynamic structure of the evening, emphasising the value of such initiatives for Romanian–British cultural dialogue and for rekindling contemporary interest in major European literary figures, alongside lesser-known yet remarkable musical talents such as the Romanian pianist-composer Carl Filtsch.

Blending literary conversation with live music, the programme offered a rich and immersive journey into the creative universe surrounding George Sand, one of the defining intellectual voices of European Romanticism. In a fascinating dialogue with writer and editor Alex Christofi, Fiona Sampson explored the central themes of her book, including Sand’s life, identity, and cultural legacy, as well as her relationship with Frédéric Chopin and the Romantic milieu they inhabited.

The musical programme was performed by pianist Alexandru Negriuc, whose interpretations, distinguished from the outset by a refined Romantic sensibility, provided a compelling counterpart to the literary discussion. Alongside his performances, Negriuc spoke about the extraordinary promise of the young Transylvanian musician Carl Filtsch, highlighting George Sand’s decisive role in enabling Filtsch to be accepted by Chopin as both student and protégé, an episode that further illustrated her influence within the artistic networks of the time.

The evening was met with a full house and an enthusiastic reception from an audience that included members of the British literary community, artists, publishers, journalists, and many new visitors to the Institute. Our warmest thanks go to Fiona Sampson for her enduring friendship and for marking such a special milestone with us at the RCI; to Alexandru Negriuc, whose wonderfully luminous performance will stay with us, and to Alex Christofi for guiding the conversation with such insight.

Many thanks also to everyone who joined us for this inspiring celebration of creativity!
