What a memorable evening we shared at the Romanian Cultural Institute London, celebrating the launch of Ludovic Bruckstein’s “Maybe Even Happiness” and a double anniversary: 15 years of Istros Books and 20 years of the Romanian Cultural Institute’s Translation and Publication Support programme.
The evening was opened by Aura Woodward, RCI London director, setting the tone for an event rich in emotion, reflection, and literary camaraderie. Although Alfred Bruckstein, Ludovic Bruckstein’s son, was sadly unable to travel from Israel due to the current situation in the world, his touching recorded message reached us all - recounting his father’s extraordinary life and the deeply personal journey of bringing his works to English readers.
Award-winning author Vesna Goldsworthy, a lasting friend of the Institute, offered moving words about the newly translated book and read a poignant passage that resonated deeply with the audience. Susan Curtis, founder of Istros Books, shared how she first discovered Bruckstein’s writing through translator Alistair Ian Blyth - a wonderful reminder of the serendipitous connections that unite translators, authors, and publishers.
Though unable to join us in person, Alfred Bruckstein connected live via video call, thanks to translator Christopher Bartholomew, who has collaborated with Istros on two translations from Mircea Eliade - bringing yet another thread of connection to this truly international evening.
As the floor opened to the audience, the gathering turned into a vibrant celebration of our extended literary family from across Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Publishers, translators, and authors who have collaborated with Istros over the years shared personal stories and reflections, creating a moment of genuine warmth and shared heritage. Among the distinguished guests, we were honoured by the presence of Romania-born film director Dov Hoenig, one of Istros’ published authors.
Heartfelt thanks go to Susan Curtis, Vesna Goldsworthy, and Alfred Bruckstein for their inspiring contributions, and to everyone who joined us in celebrating both Ludovic Bruckstein’s remarkable legacy and twenty years of the RCI’s Translation and Publication Support Programme - so valued and appreciated by Istros and all attending publishers.
Many thanks for the photos, Alex Coman.
