Last night, at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, we had the pleasure of hosting “Whispers of Seduction: Romania’s Orchids Revealed” — a truly unique project shedding light on a little-known fact: Romania is home to an extraordinary diversity of wild orchids, a hidden natural treasure that remains largely unknown to the public.
Following her successful participation at the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Orchid Show last week, researcher and photographer Nora De Angelli brought this remarkable and eye-opening body of work to London, captivating audiences once again.
The event was opened by Aura Woodward, director of RCI London, setting the tone for an inspiring evening. Dr. De Angelli’s talk that followed was nothing short of fascinating — a journey into a secret world few have ever encountered. Through her research and striking imagery, the audience discovered the astonishing “bio-hacking” strategies these wild orchids use to survive, from mimicking visual and chemical signals to manipulating insect behaviour in ways that feel almost surreal. Beyond their beauty, these plants revealed themselves as masters of adaptation, highlighting both their uniqueness and their fragility.
Guests were then invited to explore the photographic exhibition in the Brâncuși Gallery, where each image uncovers a story rarely told. As the artist herself beautifully put it, her work is “a lesson in cherishing nature, where every image of a Romanian orchid tells a story of resilience and authentic beauty.”
An unforgettable evening celebrating a hidden facet of Romania’s natural heritage - one that inspires wonder, curiosity, and a renewed commitment to protecting these fragile ecosystems.
Many thanks to Nora De Angelli for this memorable journey and to everyone who joined us! The “Orchids of Romania” exhibition can be visited at 1 Belgrave Square until 30 March, Mon–Fri, 10am–4pm. Don’t miss it! ✨
