Romanian Scenes: A Musical Portrait - Gala Recital by Mezzo-soprano Adriana Festeu and Pianist Cristian Sandrin

✨🎵On 4 December, the Romanian Cultural Institute in London hosted a gala recital within its longest-running and most acclaimed permanent programme, the “Enescu Concert Series”, dedicated to celebrating Romania’s National Day.

The evening featured two outstanding Romanian-British musicians, both graduates of the Royal Academy of Music: mezzosoprano Adriana Festeu and pianist Cristian Sandrin. 🎶🎹

The event was opened by Aura Woodward, Director of ICR London, who welcomed the large audience, spoke about the special occasion we were celebrating, and introduced the musicians. H.E. Laura Popescu, Romania’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, then shared a message on the significance of the National Day and the ideal of unity among all Romanians, reminding us that identity is shaped not only by the past but also by the creative energy and values of the present.

Conceived as a musical journey through Romania’s history and cultural identity, the recital programme unfolded through a series of complementary “scenes”, portraying the evolution of a nation at the crossroads of cultures. 🎵🌍

🌾 The concert opened with evocative soundscapes from the rural world, signed by Felicia Donceanu, Tiberiu Brediceanu, and Gheorghe Dima. 🎶

🎼 This was followed by a segment dedicated to the Francophone influence, reflecting Romania’s cultural affinity with the French-speaking world through works by George Enescu and Adrian Pop.

⚔️ Scenes of conflict and reconciliation then took shape through compositions by Vivaldi, Pascal Bentoiu, and Kurt Weill. 🎻

🎭 The programme concluded on a vibrant note with famous opera pages from Bizet’s Carmen and Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. 🎵🎤

👏 The audience of more than 160 guests — members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Romanian diaspora, and the general public — received the musicians’ performance with great enthusiasm, rewarded in the end with a well-deserved encore. 💛💙❤️🎶
