Brâncuși's Monumental Ensemble & the Women Who Commissioned It

Last Friday, the Romanian Cultural Institute in London hosted the second event in the Brâncuși 150 Season, an evening that also marked International Women’s Day by celebrating the remarkable women whose civic vision helped bring one of Romania’s most iconic artistic projects to life. The event explored the extraordinary role played by the women of Gorj County who commissioned Constantin Brâncuși’s monumental ensemble in Târgu Jiu, a sculptural tribute to the heroes of the First World War and one of the defining achievements of twentieth-century public art.

Following an opening address by RCI London director Aura Woodward, the evening began with a keynote presentation by art critic and writer Magda Cârneci, whose insightful talk placed the creation of the ensemble by Constantin Brâncuși in its wider artistic and historical context, while shedding light on the remarkable initiative of the women of Gorj County who supported the project. The programme then continued with a roundtable discussion moderated by Aura Woodward, in which Magda Cârneci was joined by Adina Andritoiu, President of Arethia Tătărescu Women’s League of Gorj County. Together, they offered complementary perspectives - combining critical insight and local historical knowledge - leading to an engaging conversation about the legacy of Brâncuși’s monumental ensemble and the women whose civic commitment helped bring it into being.

Guests also had the opportunity to explore the accompanying exhibition, which featured beautifully woven carpets and intricately embroidered blouses from Gorj County, all handcrafted by local women. The display evoked the remarkable civic effort that made the monumental ensemble possible: these very types of handmade textiles were created and sold by the women of Gorj to raise funds in support of the project.

We extend our sincere thanks to Magda Cârneci and Adina Andrițoiu, as well as to Adrian Tudor, Vice Mayor of Târgu Jiu, and the Târgu Jiu City Council for their valued partnership in making this event possible.

Thank you also to everyone who joined us!
