Remembering Nina Cassian at 100 Years since Her Birth
The Romanian Cultural Institute in London celebrated one of the most fascinating personalities of the Romanian literature, poetess extraordinaire NinaCassian.
The event held on 23 April was a journey of discovery and emotions as two of Nina Cassian's friends and editors, authors Carmen Firan and Alice Nastase Buciuta skilfully managed to convey to our audiences a nuanced portrait of the many artistic sides Nina Cassian excelled in: writing, but also composition, drawing, illustration and translation.
The conversation was preceded by the British premiere of Mona Nicoară and Dana Bunescu’s film Distanța dintre mine și mine / "The Distance Between Me and Me" which was received by the public with enthusiasm.
The event took place in the presence of H.E. Ambassador Laura Popescu who encouraged and supported this project from its inception and was opened by Aura Woodward, the Director of RCI London. Director Woodward introduced the speakers and the film and underlined the fact that this event took place on Shakespeare's birthday, Nina Cassian being one of the Bard's most acclaimed translators.
As always, we are grateful to our exquisite guests and to our ever-growing audiences for celebrating in style ninacassian100 at 1 Belgrave Square.
Poetesse extraordinaire, masterful translator of Shakespeare, Molière and Bertolt Brecht, utopia lover, famous for declaring that her "motherland has always been the Romanian Language", Nina Cassian (1924-2014) spent the last 30 years of her life in an, at the beginning, unwilling American exile which she soon assumed. She ended up conquering the English-speaking audiences and cultural milieus with her charisma and talent.
