About the event

“Voices from the Wall”, our interactive exhibition exploring the history of the Dacians on Hadrian’s Wall in parallel with the lives of Romanians living in England today will arrive soon in Manchester!

Please join us for the opening event, to take place on 8 May, 6.30pm at the Romanian Consulate. There will be a short talk by writer and historian Bronwen Riley, who is the curator of the exhibition. She will be joined by Cristina Crizbasan, a Roman pottery specialist at Vindolanda. We will also have a display of exquisitely decorated Romanian Easter eggs.

The Dacians, the ancestors of the Romanians, came to Britain nearly two thousand years ago to help build and defend Hadrian’s Wall. We are thrilled to partner with Bronwen Riley and Arts Council England, to offer this itinerant exhibition, which is travelling from the North to the South of England this spring.

Voices from the Wall explores the history of the Dacian presence in the North of England in the context of the current Romanian community in the UK. Over 1 million Romanians now live in the United Kingdom, contributing to Britain’s way of life and economy at all levels.

Hadrian’s Wall, built when both Dacia and Britannia were part of the Roman Empire (both provinces were trouble-makers), is a symbol of Roman power and one of the most significant historical landmarks in England. Archaeological evidence shows that the Dacians were responsible for the Birdoswald, a key fort on the wall, which is 117 km long.

Voices from the Wall exhibition can be visited in Manchester from 8 – 17 May 2024 from 10.00 - 4 pm at the Romanian Consulate located on 9 Cooper Street, M2 2FW
