About the event
To mark Romanian Language Day on 31 August, the Romanian Cultural Institute in London is delighted to present a special online campaign celebrating the Romanian language as a source of identity, belonging and cultural connection.
The campaign brings together Dr Tessa Dunlop, British historian, writer and broadcaster, and her daughter Elena, alongside Romanian writer and journalist Alice Năstase Buciută, each offering a personal perspective on the place Romanian holds in their lives.
Through these different yet closely connected voices, the project explores Romanian both as an intimate inheritance and as a cultural bond between generations. It reflects on the experience of passing the language on to a younger generation growing up in Britain, as well as on the enduring emotional connection to one’s mother tongue when living far from home. Together, these perspectives celebrate Romanian as a living language of memory, identity and belonging within Britain’s multicultural landscape.
