Cristina Schek’s Fern Girl Takes Over W4th Plinth

Romanian-British artist Cristina Schek returns to one of West London’s most visible public art projects, W4th Plinth, with her striking monumental work Fern Girl (2022).

The surreal photographic and digital artwork will transform the brick railway embankment at Turnham Green Terrace into an open-air gallery. Measuring 4 × 4 metres, it depicts a mysterious, otherworldly female figure emerging from a world of botanical forms: part child, part forest goddess, suspended between reality and imagination.

Supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, Schek’s return to W4th Plinth is a landmark moment for Romanian artistic presence in London. She is the only artist to present two different artworks in the history of W4th Plinth, following the inauguration of The Ceiling in the Sky in 2023.
